Garden shops and big box stores in North America offer consumers a variety of terrestrial and aquatic garden plants. Unfortunately, some of the plants that are available to consumers at these stores are not native to Ontario and have the potential to become invasive if these plants spread from our gardens into the wild. When invasive exotic plants escape and become established in natural areas they are difficult to control and may be impossible to completely remove.
To prevent the introduction and spread of exotic invasive plants, the Invading Species Awareness Program encourages gardeners to become familiar with invasive plants and only purchase native or non-invasive plants.
